New Puppy First-Week Checklist
A practical first-week organization guide for puppy supplies, feeding routines, home setup, veterinary information and household responsibilities.
Prepare the home before the puppy arrives
The easiest first week starts before arrival. Decide where the puppy will sleep, eat, go outside and spend supervised time. Put basic supplies in place so the household is not improvising every routine at once.
- Food and bowls
- Collar, identification and leash
- Sleeping or crate area
- Cleaning supplies
- Safe toys and chews
- A consistent outdoor routine
Write down the routine
During the first days, feeding, bathroom breaks, sleep and training can blur together. A simple written routine helps multiple people in the household stay consistent.
Record the food being used, typical meal times and who is responsible for each recurring task.
Keep care information together
Store the veterinarian name, clinic phone number, medication information if applicable, food details and important emergency contacts in one easy-to-find place. The goal is organization, not medical diagnosis.
For health concerns, use the veterinarian rather than relying on a household checklist to decide what treatment is needed.
Track what you are learning
The first week reveals preferences, triggers, bathroom patterns and training progress. Brief notes can help the household notice patterns without turning pet care into a complicated recordkeeping project.
Make responsibilities obvious
If several people share care, specify who handles morning feeding, walks, evening routines and cleanup. A checklist is most useful when every task has a clear owner and everyone can see the same information.
